Rodney Swindell, Jr.

Updated: Jul 30, 2019

My name is Rodney Swindell Jr.. I live in Durham, N.C and I’m attending Jordan High School as a rising 9th grader in the fall. I love to play sports, like football, basketball, and wrestling at school. I also enjoy playing video games like Fortnite and 2K. I'm pretty good at Fortnite. My friends think I play it too much, which is why I’m so good at it, but that’s not the only thing I do. On occasion, I play basketball or go to the pool with my friends.

I have one sibling named Tianna. She is 19 and a rising junior in college. I have three cousins on my dad's side and seven cousins on my mom’s side. My mom has two sisters and my dad has three brothers. I have two grandmothers and one great-great grandmother.

On special occasions, I do community service, like Meals on Wheels, or I help take out trash when helping people moving into new homes. On a normal day, I just sit back and play Fortnite or 2K, or I'll go play basketball with my friends. Sometimes, I'll go to the pool with my friends and my sister because my family is either at work or just don’t want to come. But, I don’t get upset when they don’t come.

Usually, I play basketball with my friends after I leave the pool. I don’t like to sit in the house that much because there’s nothing to do, but play my games. That’s why I’m so good at it. I would play my game non-stop until like, 2 o’clock in the morning. One time when my parents went out of town, I stayed up to 6 o’clock in the morning playing Fortnite. I was catching a lot wins with my friends. I try my best to get out of the house when I can.

To talk about myself: I am a drummer, I'm extremely intelligent and I am from a small town called Laurinburg, NC. I come from a big family filled with fun and laughter. We like to do a lot of traditional things, like having sleepovers on Christmas Eve or big dinners after Easter Sunday or every Sunday.

When I was 7 years old, I moved to Durham, NC with my parents after having stayed with my grandmother. From that point on, I’ve been with my parents. I started going to Hope Valley Elementary in 2nd grade. I was nervous at first, but by the time I graduated from 5th grade, I got to know a lot of people that became my close friends. After that, I went to Sherwood Githens Middle School. It was kind of weird, because the setting was bigger and there were more people there. My name became known, so in 7th grade I wasn’t worried about anything.

Little did I know, I was going to bring a BB gun to school after Christmas break, and I got in trouble. At the time, I didn’t know how someone found out. I didn’t show it to anyone, but when I got home, the principal called my mom and told her that she was told that I had a fake gun. My principal told my mom that I had to go to an alternative school, called Lakeview, for 9 weeks.

I was so nervous and scared. When you walked in, you had to take your shoes off and go through a metal detector. You couldn’t bring your phone, and you couldn’t go to the bathroom without a teacher. After I went through Lakeview, I came back to my regular school. I didn’t have the best ending, but I guess I was satisfied with it.

Then, I went to the 8th grade. I worked so hard that I made honor roll all of second semester. The first semester, I was only a few points away. I continued to work hard all year, trying to get good grades, so that I wouldn’t have to take foundational classes in high school.

As a result, I am a person who cares for the world, but I do expect something in return for the things I do because people say when you do something kind for somebody, it comes back even bigger. But, I do like to earn things, and not just have them given to me. I’m a very good and smart person.
