Poverty is a very important issue that affects many people in the United States. Poverty affects as many as 39.7% million people in the United States and poverty does not affect people equally. According to Poverty USA, there were 16.3% of women living in poverty and 13.8% of men living in poverty in the United states during 2016 . Not only does poverty affect people in the United States, but all over the world.
My parents both grew up in Mexico. They were poor and barely had enough to afford beans and rice for their family. My father states, “having a piece of meat as a kid was a luxury, even if I had to share it with my other 10 siblings”. This is a reality for many.
Poverty affects 25 million elderly people alone in the United States. About 1 billion children are affected by poverty. World wide, 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 per day. Nearly 1/2 of the world’s population — more than 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day. More than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty - less than $1.25 a day.
While poverty is a major problem all over the world, our population is increasing daily. There has been a steady decline in both the worldwide poverty and the number of extremely poor people but it’s still not enough.
